Week 4 and a bit: Fraser to Rockhampton

The islands (Fraser and Lady Musgrave) were amazing, and we had a blast. Back on the mainland it was finally time for a more sedate pace checking out little bits and pieces we came by on the road north. Of particular note was the abundance of food crop. The kids were very excited by the idea they were surrounded by sugar.

The reality turned out to be a little less delicious than they had in mind.

A roadside strawberry farm made for one particularly delicious road stop.

And a macadamia farm kept people happily entertained for an afternoon.

Being behind the Islands meant the surf beaches were replaced by long expanses of sand flats at low tide, a great place for a stroll and explore.

Agnus Waters was a highlight. Relaxed atmosphere, sunny and warm and with beautiful beaches. We are told it is one of the last swimming / surf beaches on the mainland as you head North. Thoroughly enjoyed this campsite right behind the dunes with this as our backyard:

Daniel still surfing

One of the coolest things about our trip so far is that everywhere we go is completely deserted.

…and still surfing.

Next on the agenda was to leave the coast head inland for some geology lessons. Mt Hay is a spot where ancient lava flows can be quarried for some cool gemstones. Step one is a quick geology lesson:

And then you’re off, scratching around in the dirt to seek your fortune.

With a bag full of potential loot, it was back in side and an anxious wait to see what was inside our nuggets.

Suitably impressed with their discoveries and acquired knowledge on lava flows and their role in the formation of crystals, first thing back at the caravan park was to setup the Moor Family ThunderEgg Discovery Center.

But the main attraction of the week turned out to be simple in concept (the local kids play park) albeit brilliant in execution.

Not THAT is a play park!

That’s all for now. Up to Mackay next in search of caves and waterfalls before pushing on to Airlie where my parents will join for a bit in a camper van. Stay tuned!
